On Monday, Equifax increased the number of individuals affected by the data breach announced on September 7 to 145.5 million, an increase of 2.5 million from the 143 million originally reported. Victims of the data breach will receive official notice via mail. The NJCCIC recommends all of our members review the FTC's webpage on credit security freezes and immediately place a security freeze on all family members' credit files by calling the numbers provided for the three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. For more information about the Equifax breach, please refer to this website. We also encourage victims of all data breaches to take advantage of the free credit monitoring service and, in particular, any identity theft insurance provided by the targeted organization.
