The Toms River Police Department acknowledged a data breach affecting the personal information of 3,700 individuals. The incident was discovered on August 2, 2017 when the department’s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) server began experiencing performance issues and would not start upon reboot. Upon investigation, forensic experts determined that, although certain files stored on the CAD server may have been accessed by an unauthorized party, data stored within the Spillman Technologies database—software used by over 1,900 law enforcement agencies—was not accessed. Individuals affected by the breach will be notified via mail. The NJCCIC recommends individuals affected by the breach take extra precaution in monitoring their credit report and banking accounts and report any suspicious activity to their local law enforcement and theFederal Trade Commission.
