IRS Warns of Ransomware Email Scams

On Monday, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued a warning of a new phishing campaign masquerading as official emails from the IRS and FBI, intended to infect victims with ransomware. These malicious emails include the logos of both government agencies as well as a link encouraging recipients to download a supposed FBI questionnaire. This link directs victims to a malicious website that downloads ransomware onto their systems, locking their files and demanding a payment to regain access. The IRS is also reminding US citizens that it does not use email, text messages, or social media to discuss personal tax issues, such as those involving bills or refunds, and that those with tax issues will receive notification via the US Postal Service. The NJCCIC recommends taxpayers review the IRS alert, as well as their Tax Scams and Consumer Alerts, and remain vigilant for fraudulent emails, phone calls, text messages, and social media posts.
